In 1830 Isambard Kingdom Brunel won a competition to design a bridge that would span the Avon Gorge. Politics and money however prevented the bridge from being completed until 1864 by which time Brunel had died. The Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge and is 214m (702ft) long and 75m (246ft) high.
