Entrance locks to the Floating Harbour, Cumberland Basin
Entrance locks to the Floating Harbour (before the new north entrance lock was built by Thomas Howard in 1873). The earlier North and South entrance locks can be seen: the North Lock remains substantially as was built by William Jessop, 1804–10. The South Lock was widened from 1848 to 1854 by I.K. Brunel; fitted with single leaf wrought iron gates. Both locks were superceded by the 1873 65' wide North Lock. Rownham Ferry can be seen in the foreground. This was moved upstream in 1873.
